Re-entry permits
When an emergency requires a person to leave the United States for one year or more, a re-entry permit may be required before that person can return. Re-entry permits are generally used by conditional residents and green card holders.
Re-entry permits for green card holders are usually valid for two years after the date they are issued.
Re-entry permits for conditional residents are usually valid either for two years after the date they are issued, or until the date by which they must apply for removal of their residency conditions, whichever comes first.
Note: Re-entry permits cannot be renewed or extended. If you wish to return to the United States after your re-entry permit has expired, an immigration attorney can help you determine another way to return.
Because of increased security risks and changes to United States immigration law, leaving the country while adjusting your status or extending your stay may have very serious consequences. If you do not have the proper documentation, you will likely be prohibited from returning. It is wise to consult an experienced immigration attorney in order to be certain you have the proper documentation before you leave the country.
